Scene 3
The scene opens to a small town, mainly on a house just outside the town. Outside a young girl is sitting on the stoop with a slightly older boy. They are laughing and talking together.
YOUNG MAN
You know what, I was wondering if you wanted to come with me and my family to the city this weekend. It will be really fun. They're having the carnival and I know you'd enjoy it.
Red girl
I'm sorry, but I don't think my brother will let me. He's petty strict about where I o ever since our parents died. He says that if I'm not careful, I'll end up like them...
YOUNG MAN
Oh, he can't be that bad... He's probably just a little superstitious. If you want I can explain to him where we are going...
RED GIRL
I guess asking him won't hurt.... I'll ask him later when he comes home. You should leave before he does though... He may get angry for having you over.
YOUNG MAN
Okay then. I guess I'll see you tomorrow.
RED GIRL
Bye
The young man leaves the stage.
RED GIRL
I really wonder if I should ask... He'll probably say no anyway... I wonder if I should even bother.
The blue boy walks up the path to their home and sees the red girl sitting on the stoop.
BLue boy
Good evening, sister. Why are you just sitting there? It's gettin cold out. I don't want you catching a cold now.
RED GIRL
Oh, I was just waiting for you to return home. I wasn't out long. How was work?
BLUE BOY
It wasn't bad. Not many people out today though, so I didn't get much money.
RED GIRL
Well, I was wanting to ask you something...
BLUE BOY
What is it?
RED GIRL
Well this boy from town wanted me to go with him and his family to the city for a carnival. Would it be okay if I go?
The stage is silent for a moment as the blue boy thinks.
BLUE BOY
But what if something happens to you. You know the stories mother used to tells us about our families past. I don't know if I could live another day if you die!
RED GIRL
And I don't think I can stand being all alone here all the time! Don't you realize? Those were just stories! We aren't royalty!
BLUE BOY
You have no proof that they were only stories. What if they are true? Then everything would fall into the same pattern it has for years... Just like all the others who died.
RED GIRL
Just because all those people died doesn't mean it will happen to us. You're so stupid!
The red girl pushes the blue boy out of the way and runs off stage.
BLUE BOY
I just don't know what I'd do without you...
The lights dim as the blue boy sits on the stoop.
